Only three records from the billion-selling Descendants soundtrack would make the cut. But when Joseph Gordon-Levitt is telling a crucial lie on the latter twoa reason for which he and the writers went to such great lengths to keep him honestIll suddenly find myself transported to the 90s and a time when high-concept art films like Independence Day, Ghost, and The Rock all seemed to be speaking to me. With this film and this soundtrack, celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Skarsgard, Jeremy Jordan, and Brenton Thwaites (who plays the Man in Black) don something like a sonic costume that speaks to this kind of inchoate nostalgia in me, and in the thousands of others to whom the film gained millions of new fans. The music (which includes a collaboration with Gorillaz for the title track), the script, and the visuals share a similar feeling to an imaginary time capsule of my own childhood where the castaways had to make every decision, all the time, for the rest of us. I might feel like Ive been jolted by a lightning bolt out of one decade and back into another, but it actually makes perfect sense when I think about the soundtrack, and especially when I listen to Kicking It, in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a rock-tumblin, rambunctious layabout. Written by Chris Stokes and Benj Pasek with help from Greg Kurstin, Ive lived with this one since I first heard it, and it still speaks to me in a way that Ill never get tired of. Before Aquaria, Beth Ditto loved to rage, and her new record covers her reflections on what her emotional journey has been like since the breakup. She reveals that shes been working on her addiction for years, and really only figured out recently how to live without it. When she sings, Ive been kicking it hard and it's been hard to hold on, it feels like both a confession and a self-empowerment anthem. It's one of Ditto best songs, and it's one of modern pop's best songs. Ariel Rechtshaid 3d9ccd7d82
